Scratch 'n Dent TD-20

After eyeing ebay auctions and local craiglist postings I gave up on those avenues and took the plunge on a S&D TD-20 from Musician's Friend.

Not only was the unit both Scratched and Dented, it was horribly packed without the original box or manual, the bezel was cracked, all the permiter screws showed evidence of disassembly, the master knob is loose and creates static when turned.. The screws on the botom where it mounts to a rack, not tightned. It wasn't even set back to factory defaults! You could tell someone ripped the TDW module out because the unit was all confused and half working until I reset it!!!

I have a VH-12, a DW 5000 series HH stand, a TDW module, and a POS TD-20!!!

So without a doubt this one is going back.. But how would you get the most out of this deal?? Demand a partial refund and deal with getting it fixed by Roland? Just send it back and get one elsewhere if one can be found?

Last time I buy S&D!!!!

if you are not happy with the td-20 now, you will not be later, so I would return it for a full refund. Whre are you located?

He will be happy with it im sure but not this one since its all Fu%^&^ up call them ask them if they can get you a new module, just exchange modules if not send it all back for full refund buy one else where or not a S&D.

Scratch and Dent? Damn, that sounds like Broken and Abused! If you don't mind, how much did they charge you for this atrocity? If you don't want to answer, that's cool.

That's why I NEVER buy "Scratch and Dent" electronic stuff. To many factors of questionable reliability. SEND IT BACK FOR FULL REFUND! Buy a NEW one.

As you can see, we would have gladly offered our opinions prior to your making this purchase.

Scratch and Dent is a great way to get a good deal, but I would never buy an S&D item sight unseen, no matter from whom.

Although I applaud D!z's optimism, there is no way they are going to send you a new module in exchange

I doubt it will be worth the money and hassle getting it fixed. There is almost certainly something significantly wrong with it is the previous owner cracked open the unit, then removed the expansion card making no effort to restore the unit to usability.

A unit like that should have been sold "As Is". If that is how it was offered, then you have may not have a leg to stand on. Otherwise, then just return it and save your money for a new one, or a used one you can test - or with a liberal return policy.

I think I would ask for a full refund or at least as much as it would cost to replace the parts (did you buy the whole kit or just the module?).

This actually kind of suprises me. If I bought a used DVD I would expect it to be scratched because people don't look after it. If I bought a games console of a kid you would expect grubby finger marks but If I bought a TD-20 I would expect it to be a little dusty with minor marks at most. These things are expensive and I would have thought people would look after them and respect the fact that the new owner has paid a lot and expects some good quality kit....sigh....

Cokecan, how did they advertise this unit? Did they just list it as S&D without any further description or did they say what the problems were to any extent at all? That and any conditions they set as far as return policy probably mean a lot. If they poopooed the problem or problems and made it sound like a lot less than it was then I'd say they misrepresented it. And the packing job as you said it would be a real problem to me although I can understand no owners manual or box, though I feel they should have stated that regardless. I go along with stickinthemud too about the "as is" part too.

I'm fine without the box or manual, just not a thrashed unit..

I paid 1840 out the door for it, no tax, free shipping. I just called them up and it doesn't seem like it will be a problem to get my money back. Fairly painless RMA process, but they have no stock new or otherwise so it will be a straight return.

I found a brand new one at a local music shop for 1799 so I'm looking at 1960 out the door for it. Seems kind of high, especially if there is a new model looming!

Meh, I have the TDW module in hand.. What to do..

They are actually cheaper than the prices I saw before the TD-20 dropped off the face earth. Just add the expansion card and you'll be set!

We just got a bunch of new TD-20's in after waiting 5 months if we can help. I've seen a lot of Roland modules b-stock that were in great shape but that was from the factory. This must be a customer return that was not inspected very well. Sorry you had issues I'm sure you just want to play your drums.

Wow that's no good. Musicians Friend has never given me any problems ever. I use them for almost everything I buy. I also rarely buy scratch & dent though.
