DIY SPDS: Can I use a voltage source instead of a piezo?

This topic is actually happening over at eDrumming.com, but I thought it was such a great idea that I thought I make everybody over here aware of it. Also, I was wondering if the TD-20 could use this type of device. (is it possible to program multiple sounds based on velocity; (i.e. I hit tom#1 softly and I get a gun shot, hit tom#1 hard and get a car horn)

eDrummin.com topic

I think this could be huge

this is really nothing new (sorry to be the one to tell you). the spds will do 2 sounds. even my old ensoniq sampler did 8 velocity layers like 12 years ago.

It's not the multi-sounds that is the cool part, it is the idea of breaking those (in your example of your ensoniq sampler) 8 velocities up into 8 separated pads with one mono input. That is what the link is talking about over at eDrumming.com. I know that some if not most samplers can be programed with multi-sounds based on velocity, but I didn't know if the TD-20 could be. I ask this because I use a TD-8 and there is one sound in it, that I can think of off the top of my head, that does the 2 velocity based sound triggering. The thing is, as an end user I am not able (through my TD-8) to assign sounds based on velocity to the same input. If someone know how to do this, please let me know because, it is not in the owner's manual.

are you trying to plug more than one pad into an input and have each pad play a different sound? unless the pads gave off different but exact voltage for each pad i dont know how you could do that. and even then it would be just a bunch of glorified footswitchs. your sounds wouldnt have much life to them. it would just be a trigger to play a sound at a constant level.

I have a question out of curiosity, have you click over to eDrumming.com to read the topic?, or are you just responding to what I have written here. Some sounds don't need to be different levels. A gun shot is a gun shot. a laser blast is a laser blast. These type of effects don't necessarily have to be velocity sensitive to have "life". If you want to call it glorified foot-switch, so be it. However some people may like the idea of having that kind of expandability.

I skimmed over some of it, but i'd think a keyboard sampler would be more effective for that sort of purpose.

Would you really smash your keyboard with your drumsticks?

I suppose not. I was assuming he was talking about using it for lead ins and fills and what not, where you'd just use your left hand without dropping the stick. my friend had a ten or so key midi keyboard he used for this. Just using the stick would keep you in the beat better.

im just responding to your questions. i dont have time to start visiting another forum. im all about getting extra out of a unit. i was just commenting that even if it was possible it wouldnt trigger like a normal drum sound. i didnt realize there was much of a need for triggering just sound effects.i guess things like farts, slide whistles, and bottle smashes may be an important part of a perccusionists set up.

For all those who are interested (which aren't many), I got the circuit that should work. See the attached image.

You could in theory add as many switches as you would like, but I thought four was a good number.
