The Ludalloy Supra has that perfect crack to it.
We sampled one for C&V, but unfortunately damped it a little and that plus the fact it wasn't recorded in a big wood room (ala Bonham) is the difference.

Chris, is that the 402? That's the snare in my Addictive Drums example of Joe's MIDI - check it out. I would appreciate your take on it - it's a few posts back. It has a great Bonham-like smack to it, IMHO.

Cheers.

I really like the Black Beauty in the Vintage Rock EZX you did, BTW. While the point of most of the examples I made wasn't to get a Bonham sound, after reviewing those Bonham outtakes and then going back over what I had done, the Vintage Rock Black Beauty I thought really had that satisfying crack and tone. Those drums from the VR EZX are in C&V SDX, no?

Here's a mix with metal foundry.....I'm sure I've mucked about with it too much - I tried to use the chamber channel with a fade to emulate the sound on the bonham original, well I tried anyway

The 1970's Black Beauty (6.5") is a close cousin to the classic Bonham Supra. Just a little warmer to my ears.
Bonham is credited as a BB user, but I think he used the Supra almost all of the time.

Yes, all of them.

I've loaded your midi and it works. So I'll try and do a C&V mix, but I have a busy week ahead of me.

Okay,

This is an Andy Johns kit from Classic Drums for BFD using the supplied MIDI...

No effects except to compress the stereo room and put some EQ on the master fader in BFD2 to roll off the top and slightly add some bottom (shelving) to make it sound a little older....

That is a great sounding kit Rail.

Is it possible to get some more volume on the open HiHat?

Thanks to those so far who have taken their time to get the MIDI file wired up to their VST and recording!

I debated whether or not it was a good idea to use that particular MIDI to do these examples. It was recorded a long time ago while listening to a module's internal sound. But the fact is, if you record monitoring ANY library, the dynamics of that library will influence the performance and will need customization when plugging it into another. I find myself using custom velocity curves for each library I've recorded, and I hope that anyone using the MIDI realizes this. I think it is brilliant that we can do that sort of stuff in a VST. And this way, none of the libraries benefit from having been the one used during the recording.

Rail,

Is that the kit that was used when Platinum Samples first began and you just had the "DEMO" link on the Andy Johns page to give a listen? (this was before the library was released)

Because, I have to say, it was that demo that made me get really interested in VSTs in the first place. Your library wasn't out then, and I decided to go with dfh Superior. Then I was locked out of using your kits since they were BFD (1 and 2) only. I think it is great you and Toontrack worked to bring out an SDX. I hope you do more!

Sounds fantastic. The cymbals and toms have a lot of definition like the Bonham demo. I still have not heard the Bonham rimshot sound yet. I think it is just how he hits the drum.

No, I think that was a mix from different kits.. I'm not sure.. I'd have to go back to the archives...

Same as before with more Hat (with the Vistalite snare):
