Yamaha cymbal conversion

I have a TD-6V. I also have a Yamaha PCY-150S cymbal. I want to use the cymbal as a 3 zone (bow/bell/edge) ride. I know at one time there was a thread here about that mod, so I looked for and found it. Problem is, the link refered to in the thread is now dead.

Can anyone point me to a graphic and/or very detailed explanation of how to accomplish the mod?

Help is much appreciated!!

Are you good at electronics? By that I mean being able to read schematics, find your way around a PCB and use multimeters.

Well, the OP did specifically request a guide for the PCY150s, and most of your finds are PCY135/155. They are functionally similar but have different PCBs.
Your first link does have a guide for the 150, but it's text only.

Yes but I thought they might be useful......as none of them are "dead" and easily found while searching.

I just clicked every one of the the links and they are all the full thread versions....not text only.

I couldn't find the one you mentioned.

Ah, my bad. I meant that: there is a guide for modding the PCY150S in your first link, but it doesn't have any pictures. It is only a textual description.

hehehehe.....yeah and after pouring through the links a bit...you have to put a few things together from the comments for the PCY135/155 mod about the 150 mod to actually DO the 150S mod.

Talk about the "Run-around"!!

Oh well the photos and explanation of the "newer" mod may add some insight. Also the search engine that I posted may be of some use anyway.

I can read schematics and use a Fluke meter. If you have a schematic for this mod, I can absolutely go by it!

No problem. The mod is actually pretty simple. See these schematics:

I don't remember the exact circuit around the piezo which involves a few resistors, capacitors and a potentiometer, but it really doesn't matter.

Here are the instructions from daveybabes posted back in 2008. Thank you daveybabes!

Step 1 - remove bow sensor carefully prise

Step 2 - Reseat it with double sided foam tape cut to size of ceramic to let the brass edge ring (gives better response this way for Pos Sensing) just gets the piezo closer to the trigger surface too.

Step 3 - Remove the resistor marked R2 on the board (this seperates the bell film trigger from the edge film trigger so the sounds don't leak into each other)

Step 4 - Get a stereo jack plug connector TRS - (the female part that you plug the jack into?) use some wire and connect "Tip" to C1 next to that brown (round) capacitor on the board (i connected from underneath)

Step 5 - Connect Ring from the jack connector to one of the empty holes of where the resistor was (look at R2 and it's the other side nearest to the jack where the other end of the resistor was)

Step 6 - I earthed it from sleeve on the jack connector to the earth point under jack connector on the board.

Lastly i turned the attenuator pot up to max

I just did this conversion on my PCY150s and it works great on my TD-10 (expanded with the first-generation TDW non-Vcymbal board) - the ride is plugged into port 10 as usual, and the bell is plugged into Aux1.


Also, I had to peel off the top rubber layer of the PCY150S to clean out the "pixie dust" that was causing the bell to choke on strong hits. It's kind of tough to remove, but goes back on easily.
