Cheers for the info Mojje. I'm waiting to hear about the diameter from the edge of lip of a 9x2 cakepan to see if it would fit before I take the plunge. Its a tapered pan so wouldn't need drilled out for screws etc.

I just wanted to ad some pix.

Now all the toms are done. I only have the two floor toms left, and after that some Zildjan Gen 16... and then TD-30...... and.........
But tomorrow were off to Thailand or maybe

The green tape is some sport tape who does not stick to the surface, but it sticks to it self. !? you know what I mean?
The only reason it´s green is because it doesn't show and it was on a BIG sale.

Also another thing I will try, is to paint the inside of the cake pan with some special black rubberish fire protective paint, the car sound guys use fore sound damping. To take out the "ping" from the pan.

The product is called "Noise Killer"

Just curious but why is your piezo "face(ceramic)" side down? If that's your rim piezo....the ceramic side needs to be "face" up.

Let us know how that goes. I have gaffer tape stuck to the bottom of my pan as a temporary solution to this, but I'd like something better.

    Hmmm, why?

When the cone kit came from Quartz the rim piezo came with the tape pre attached on the ceramic. I was a little confused at first, but figured when it came that way it should be like that.
    He should know, or??

Any way it´s triggers fine. But does any one have a different experience?

I don't have any experience of rim triggers yet, but I will be ordering 5 of his trigger harnesses soon so I would be interested to know which way it should go also.

Have a great hol in Thailand. I've been to Phuket, its great there and Singha beer is amongst the best in my opinion!

The tape was probly an oversight. The only way I know to explain this is........The Brass side down is suppose vibrate(or do the bending) as it is the "functioning" part of the piezo. The pan actually become an extension of the piezo and thus promotes successful rim triggering. Also the ceramic is a bit fragile and may crack when smacked around and damage the piezo. The a replacement would be needed because triggering would suffer.

I'm sure there will be electrical experts here that will give a nice technical description but this is the way I was shown for the basic reason I stated.

I doubt you will find any build in the archives, pan or crossbar, that have the ceramic side down.

He he, cool. Then I´m the first

Anyhow the cone sits direct on the ceramic, so I figure it has to do with the long life concern for the rim. Not the performance.

How nice of Quarts to make a practical joke on me There were no extra tape included in the package, so I really figured it would be this way, and now I´m not gonna change it until it brakes :P

Look at it this way.... Thinking out of the box, and go you´re own way

Well, lets see how long it will last................

    hehehe....it's your baby.

Also depending on it's movement, and the thickness of the tape, the solder points may short on the pan. (just something to check if you should have problems....the piezo may still be fine if this is the case....just turn it over)

The cone protects piezo....specifically the ceramic while transferring the stick contact(That's why you don't usually just see a piezo taped to the bottom center of the batter/mesh head. It wouldn't last long. ) and the "Dot" or foam tape between the piezo and the platform allows the piezo to bend or vibrate freely and isolates it from the rim trigger/piezo. If you notice, it(Foam/dot) too is/should be about the same size as the ceramic part on the opposite side.

All these factors are just time tested and compared for successful triggering in DIY builds with Roland modules.

Just for documentations sake....let us know how it's doing and how long it lasted if you should have to replace it

Wow, I hope Quartz doesnt make the same mistake when I order mine, but at least I know how it should be.

    Hi Folks.
I always fix a piezo the ceramic facing where the hit is coming. So, under each foam, the ceramic is facing the top of the cone. The same for the piezo used for the rim shot. I stuck the double sided adhesive on the ceramic side to be fixed directly on the wall of a shell.

    Hi.

    A little off topic, but.

I´m fine. Just spent some hoers on a hotel roof in Phuket

We manage to handle the 17 cm high tsunami.

    And now back to topic.

I figured that the piezo issue was some theory, and it´s not wrong with theories as long you tell them as a theories and not as facts
I also started a theory in my head when I received my order from Quartz. And thats the reason I just proceeded without threding here on the forum

Time will tell how it will work.

Any how, thanks for the reply Qman.
It gives me courage and hope about my build

Ok, so just to clear that up, the rim piezo will work just fine with the doublesided tape stuck to the ceramic, then stuck to the wall of the shell. Have I got it right Quartz?

    Many thanks

I've browsed many builds on this and other forums and I do not remember a single one that mounted the rim piezo in this fashion. Seems counter productive to my understanding of the way a piezo works. In fact even with the reflection plate builds that I have seen with the piezo mounted on the back side of the plate furthest from the mesh batter head....the brass was still attached to the plate with the ceramic facing away from the mesh batter head.

    Hi Daniel.

I hope you don´t take this as bad critic. I re-red my post and noticed that it maybe could be taken in a negative way.

You have ben to a lot of help for me and I assume others who has started to DIY.

    Cheers/
    Mojje
