    Drilling vent holes

    Hi folks,

I've cut my shell in half and marked out my lug, but where is the best place for my vent\jack hole?

Is there a recognised ideal place to put your vent hole?

    Anybody any preferences or ideas?

Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

    Cheers

Structurally, I don't think it makes a huge difference so long as you're not too close to another hole or edge. Aesthetically, vertically centered and centered between two lugs. Personally, I don't think they're all that pretty so I would tend to place them toward the side. Of course, you could go for a symmetrical look and try to balance the jack (visualize mount in center, jack between the next pair of lugs to one side and vent between the pair on the other side of the mount). I'm not sure exactly what you're doing here so there might be only one hole (I don't have a resonant head on mine, it's open, so there's no vent hole).

Thanks for the reply Jim. I'm putting a hoop and bottom head on my custom build for aesthetic reasons only. I will have to drill a hole for my jack to fix it inside the shell and I just wondered if there was a correct place to put it.

No specific place. Just make sure that once a cable is plugged into it that it does not interfere with your mounting and positioning process. Also if you want to hide the cable(from your site or the audience) you may want to mount it on one of the sides between the toms or somewhere else that is hidden from view.

Cable management goes a long way to hiding the jack and keeping the kit stealth looking too.

Thanks Daniel. I will take your advice and drill the jack-holes on the inside side of my toms so as to try and hide the cables a bit. Thanks a lot once again Daniel! Your knowledge and experience really helps first time DIYers like myself.

No problem. Glad I could help. Post some pics when you get everything sorted.

If you choose to place them on the inside (drummer side) just be aware that now you're running the cables closer to you and your legs. Personally, I think the best place to put them is at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions as they will not be in your way and should not interfere with your mounts. I don't think there's much of a "stealth" issue here, either. After all, they'd still be way less obtrusive than if you had mics in that same position. If you use right angle plugs there will be even less of a clearance or "visual distraction" issue.

    Good advise, Jim...I concur.

Thanks Jim and Daniel, 10 and 2 o'clock it is then depending on which tom it is and where it is on my kit.

Daniel, I am very impressed with your knowledge, experience and skills with building triggers. Could I ask a massive favour please if its not too cheeky? Would you send me a pm or just reply here with a description of how you built your cakepan triggers and the order of components from head downwards if possible please? Pretty please??
    Millions of thanks!

    Thanks Danoh!

My knowledge and experience just looks massive because I'm always here and always seem to have something to say. I like to help if I can. There are plenty more folks here with miles more experience than I have. In fact I learned it ALL here from all of them and knew absolutely NOTHING before I found this place. The wealth of info on this forum in inexhaustible and priceless.

I hear what you are saying. I'm on square one right now, digesting all I can find. Inexhaustible and priceless it is indeed!

It is nice to know, there are people that made that experience like I do now, and are more knowledgeable that I am! To hear from you and others that have all 'been there before', is worth a lot to me!

I've drilled my vent holes at 2 o'clock for my left high tom and 10 o'clock for my right high tom. I drlled them in the middle of the 2 lugs, but closer towards the bottom head in an effort to make them less obvious.

    Thanks again chaps!
