    Talking KD9 vs KD8

    Hi folks

I can't find anything on this using the Search utility.

I'm contemplating buying a KD9 kick trigger to replace my rather thumpy KD8 so I've got a couple of questions which will help my decision.

Is the 9 quieter than the 8? If so, significantly quieter?

What is more like the feel of a real bass drum?

Is it worth upgrading from an 8 to a 9?

Cheers everyone for all your help, I love these forums!

I loved how the KD9 felt when I played it in a store. In comparison the KD8 felt like hitting a wall. The KD9 is probably the nicest feeling kick pad I've played, triggered great and it was silent as well. It's really soft and your finger sinks into it when you press on the head. It's some kind of cloth and not mesh.

Is the KD9 more pleasant to use than mesh kicks?

Quite a few people prefer the Eight to mesh kicks, because of the rebound. I rather think these same people would preferthe Nine to those mesh kicks.

I went from an 8 to a 9, still have and play both (8 on the practice rig, 9 on the gigging rig). Never have played a mesh head bd, so no personal experience there.

The 8 was/is very noisy, as you know. The 9 is quiet, but there's still some slap there... I want to say, maybe, half as much? Something like that. I prefer the feel of the 9 because coming from 30 years of acoustic drums I have a tendency to revert to form and bury the beater every now and then, and the 9 "feels" better under my foot when I do. With the 8, as said earlier, it's like hitting a brick wall.

Trigger response seems the same to me, but I'm not that discerning... if I hear the bd, it's working; if not, I probably missed a beat.

Package-wise, that collapsing 8 with the the little screws I had to take in and out was a real PIA for me, and it didn't seem workable to leave it set up for transport. On the other hand, now I have the 9 and it doesn't collapse down at all, so there you are.

Overall, I prefer the feel, look, transport of the 9 over the 8. Especially the feel... and the quiet.

Defintely more pleasant to play on. Roland re designed their kick pad technology because people complained about the bouncy feel of mesh. I bet their first priority was great feel and they succeeded in hat IMO.

Is there a recommended type of beater to use with the KD-9? Plastic, felt, wood, other?

I was wondering the same thing. Also, how well would an impact patch adhere to it?

If you have any trouble I highly recommend Scotch 3M #77 Spray Adhesive! Can be bought for around $10 off eBay and works great! Only problem is if you ever want to get it off!

Keep it real simple, just IMO: the 9 blows the 8 away and to me there is no comparison.

I play E-Drums solely for many reasons; one of them is that they DO NOT feel like acoustics to me, (which I like!), {SOLELY IMO!}, I abhor acoustics, (always have even, when I played them, which was for most if my life, and I started when I was 5 years old). I do not push my students into anything, but if they ask, I tell them IMO E-Drums are an opening to an infinite universe, whereas A-Drums are one sound, (not good sound-SOLELY IMO), and there is no where to go once you got em.

I also find the mesh Rolands utterly annoying: playing on and with a super ball- JUST IMO.

I do not know if the 30 kit fixed that or not, but in case I ever jump up it will be to a 30 as NO OFFENSE: I do not like the 12, and why go to a 20 when for few more there is the 30 .
BUT: if it is a bouncy head, it is being replaced real fast with a 9

I just acquired a TD9K-2 recently (complete with KD9) and wanted to try to keep the bass drum beater impact sound to a minimum. So, I tried a Remo Falam Slam patch, which stuck just fine to the cloth KD9 surface, but actually INCREASED the acoustic attack sound. Not the result I was aiming for. As an aside...I'm using a CAMCO single pedal with the stock felt beater. I just ordered this: http://drumsonsale.com/product.php?id_product=1032 thinking it might do the trick.

I have tried both the KD-8 and the KD-9 side by side in a store, and the KD-9 seems slightly quieter to me. I think the real problem when playing at night is not so much the acoustic noise but how much vibration the pad transmits to the floor. Do you think the KD-9 transmits less vibration?
