Kick Pedal Lubrication ..

Hey Everyone!

I'm sure this been discussed before however I couldn't find anything applicable so I'll have to ask

What lubricating products would you all recommend to protect our kick drum pedals ?

I've been warned away from WD40 and similiar products however I have no idea what is appropriate. Any suggestions or cheapish alternatives ?

I've got a pair of DW9000's & Axis A Longboards. The Axis booklet recommends Lithium Grease, which I can't seem to find!!

i've only had the odd squeak with my Gibbie pedal, but I've never had a problem with using a quick burst of WD40 on it.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've made a few calls and looked at about 1000 Internet articles, apparently we should stay away from WD40.

A number have mentioned that WD40 is a solvent based product which evaporates quickly & it's known to cause bearing problems on kick drum pedals. The suggestion from everyone seems to be to opt for a light oil, something like Penetro90/Penetrene in the spray version.

This opinion is also mirrored on the Joe 'Ballistic' Stronzick video aswell.

That's the stuff! You should be able to get it at any decent bicycle shop (but unless your Axis is at least a couple of years old and gets used very regularly, it shouldn't need any?)

Air tool oil....fantastic. Its light, and gets into bearings very easily.
I use a lanolin based oil at work (I repair air tools for a living!) and it leaves a oily film which is very slippery.
I use it on my pedal I made, and its great.

I've only had my Axis pedals for two days (they are complicated but by far a superior pedal to everything else in my opinion) and I'm still tweaking them. I noticed that some of the lubriciant had actually dried up. I pulled the pedals apart, scratched away the old, crusty lubriciant and applied a temporary light oil .. They feel absolutely beautiful to play now.

Ahhhh .. I didn't check bicycle stores, I'll pop past my local one and see if I can get ahold of some Lithium Grease.

CRC make lithium grease in a spraycan which should work well i got some at a auto parts store. also mystery air tool oil

This may only apply to the people in Australia but just letting you know that both CRC Lithium Grease (in a spraycan) and 303 Aerospace Protectant can both be found in most Autobarn stores ..

That might save you a bit of running around. If they don't have it, they can most certainly order it ..

I've gotten lithium grease at Do-It Center before, not in a spray can form though. Check your local hardware store. They might have it.

Go to a bike shop... they will have the stuff... I am an avid cyclist so I know.

I've been using 3 in 1 oil...not sure if it's ok or not...but bearings are cheap to replace so I haven't worried too much. I've also used a chain and cable lubricant that has Molybdenum in it. Works nicely! (Don't get it on your skin though...it's bad 4 ya.)
